The experience

Onitama feels like a martial-arts duel played through movement and positioning. Two players command a master and four students across a compact battlefield, each searching for the perfect opening to strike.

The movement cards are visible to both players, so there are few secrets. Every technique you use passes to your opponent, giving them a new option to use against you later. This creates a constant rhythm of planning, reacting, and anticipating how the battlefield will change.

Games are quick, focused, and often end with the realization that the decisive move began several turns earlier.

Who it is perfect for

Onitama is an excellent choice for couples, friends, and family members who enjoy direct two-player competition. It is especially suited to players who like chess, checkers, abstract strategy games, or tactical video games but want something faster and easier to bring to the table.

Its small footprint and short playing time also make it a strong option for date nights, coffee shops, travel, or playing several matches in one sitting. The rules are approachable enough for newer players, while the changing movement cards give experienced players plenty to explore.

Before you choose

Onitama is designed specifically for two players, so it will not entertain an entire group at once. It is also a game of open information with very little luck. Your decisions determine the outcome, and a more experienced player may have a noticeable advantage.

The theme is presented through the artwork, terminology, and movement cards, but the game remains an abstract tactical duel rather than a story-driven adventure. Choose Onitama when both players want a focused contest built around careful decisions and learning from previous matches.

The Side Quest take

Onitama captures much of what makes chess compelling while creating a faster and more approachable experience. The shared movement cards are what make it special: every technique you play changes your opponent’s possibilities and reshapes the match.

We recommend it for two people who want a game they can learn quickly and continue improving at over time. A single match may only take around fifteen minutes, but the changing card combinations make it easy to reset the board and immediately ask for a rematch.

Elegant. Strategic. Always shifting.

Onitama is a small game capable of creating a lasting rivalry.
