The experience

Codenames turns a table full of ordinary words into a secret intelligence operation. Two rival teams race to identify their agents while avoiding innocent bystanders, enemy operatives, and the assassin who can end the mission instantly.

Each Spymaster gives a one-word clue followed by a number, hoping their teammates will connect several words through a single idea. The excitement comes from watching everyone interpret that clue in completely different ways.

Every round creates its own shared language, unexpected connections, and memorable moments of either brilliant teamwork or complete misunderstanding.

Who it is perfect for

Codenames is a strong choice for parties, family gatherings, game nights, and groups with a mix of experienced and newer players. It works especially well for friends who enjoy wordplay, clever clues, team competition, and discovering how differently everyone thinks.

Before you choose

Codenames is at its best with enough players to form two active teams. Although smaller-player variations exist, the livelier team format creates more discussion, disagreement, and surprising guesses.

Because the game revolves around language and associations, the experience depends heavily on the group. Younger players, language differences, or uneven familiarity with certain references can make some clues more difficult. Spymasters also need to be comfortable staying quiet while their teammates debate what the clue might mean.
